ANAHEIM DUCKS
TEAM REPORT: Anaheim squeaked into the playoffs last year and knocked off the cup favourite and President Trophy Winners San Jose Sharks. The loss of Chris Pronger will hurt the Ducks but they are a young team growing together and will battle for the final two playoff spots once again next year. Anaheim was 14th overall for scoring (2.90 goals per game) and 4th for their powerplay (23.6%).
OFFENSIVE WARRIORS: Ryan Getzlaf – Getzlaf led the Ducks in scoring last year with 91 points in 81 games and he will continue to lead the Ducks offensively. Getzlaf is a 90-point player and will consistently hit that mark year after year. Not only will Getzlaf get you 90+ points he will also bring in 100+ PIMS. Getzlaf is a must in roto-leagues.
POWER PLAY QUARTERBACK: Scott Niedermayer – This will likely be Niedermayers last season in the NHL as he is 35 years old but his numbers are not dropping. Niedermayer had his 3rd highest point totals of his career last year. Niedermayer will run the powerplay and you can expect another 50+ points and 25+ power play points season.
LAST LINE OF DEFENSE: Jonas Hiller – Hiller spilt the season last year but this season will be his time to shine. Hiller played in 13 of the 14 playoff games and had a GAA of 2.23 and save percentage of 0.943. This is Hiller's team now and he will start 50+ games.
DROP THE GLOVES: Mike Brown – Brown led the Ducks in PIMs and only played half the season. Brown had 145 PIMs in 48 games; with a new contract under his belt Brown should see the ice on a regular basis, which will only increase his PIMs totals. Brown dropped the gloves 19 times last year.
BEST BARGAIN: Bobby Ryan – Ryan is in the final year of his first contract and this will be the last time he will be a best bargain player. You won't find many 30+ goals scorers making only 0.765 million a season. Ryan scored a whopping 31 goals in only 64 games last year, so 40 goals is not out of the question for next year.
THE NEW YOUNG GUNS: Matt Beleskey – After finishing a steadily improving junior career for Belleville, Beleskey had a late start to his pro career thanks to shoulder surgery in the summer. Despite the early setback, it didn't dampen his immediate impact in Iowa. Beleskey busted out of the gates amassing 20 points in his first 27 games and even got a mid season call-up with the Ducks for 2 games. Beleskey will likely start the year in the AHL again but could be one of the early call-ups and could secure a spot on the 3rd / 4th line with solid play.
STEER CLEAR: Teemu Selanne – Selanne has announced this will be his last season and he is clearly on the downside of his career. Selanne will add valuable leadership to the Ducks but that will not put points on your fantasy roster. Selanne will play on the second line with Saku Koivu when both are healthy, which won't be too often. In keeper leagues there are younger players who will score the same amount and be around for more then one season. Selanne showed he could still score goals so he could come close to the 30-goal mark again this year, but there are too many factors that need to fall into place for that to happen.
TAKE THE GAMBLE: Joffrey Lupul – Lupul returns to Anaheim as part of the Pronger trade, this is a good move for Lupul as he goes back to a team where he had some success. Lupul will be given second line minutes and if he can build off of last seasons 50 points he has the potential for a 30 goals and 30 assists season.
